  1.                        Expense Log Version 3.0 -- README

  3.    THANK YOU for purchasing Expense Log 3.0!
  4.  
  5.    HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPENSE LOG 3.0:
  6.    -----------------------------------------
  7.    o  2MB or more RAM
  8.    o  80386SX or higher processor
  9.    o  624K hard disk space for software
  10.    o  Mouse driver installed
  11.    o  VGA color graphics card/monitor or better
  12.    
  13.    TO INSTALL EXPENSE LOG:
  14.    ----------------------
  15.    Run INSTALL.EXE from either a floppy diskette or your hard disk
  16.    
  17.    TO RUN EXPENSE LOG:
  18.    ------------------
  19.    The first time you run EL30.EXE, the program will create three files to
  20.    hold your expense information in.  They are:
  21.  
  22.       EXPLOG.DAT    EXPLOG.K01    EXPLOG.K02
  23.  
  24.    EXPLOG.DAT is the data file which holds your expense records in the order
  25.    which they are entered (sequential).
  26.  
  27.    EXPLOG.K01 is a "key" file which sorts EXPLOG.DAT's records in the
  28.    following order: 
  29.    
  30.       Date, Time, Category, Description
  31.  
  32.    EXPLOG.K02 is another "key" file which sorts EXPLOG.DAT's records in the
  33.    following order: 
  34.    
  35.       Category, Description, Date, Time
  36.  
  37.    IMPORTANT:
  38.    ---------
  39.    MAKE SURE YOU OBSERVE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:
  40.    1.  EXPLOG.DAT, EXPLOG.K01, AND EXPLOG.K02 MUST RESIDE IN THE SAME
  41.        DIRECTORY AS EL30.EXE IN ORDER TO BE ACCESSIBLE.  DO NOT PUT THE
  42.        DATA FILES IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTORY OR SUBDIRECTORY OR THE
  43.        PROGRAM WILL GENERATE THREE NEW EMPTY FILES.
  44.  
  45.    2.  DO NOT DELETE EITHER EXPLOG.K01 OR EXPLOG.K02.  BOTH FILES ARE
  46.        NECESSARY FOR THE REPORTING OPTIONS BUILT INTO EXPENSE LOG.
  47.  
  48.    3.  DO NOT RENAME EXPLOG.DAT, EXPLOG.K01, OR EXPLOG.K02.  IF THEY ARE
  49.        RENAMED, THE PROGRAM WILL GENERATE THREE NEW EMPTY FILES.
  50.  
  51.    4.  MAKE PERIODIC BACKUPS OF YOUR INFORMATION.  THE ONLY WAY TO RESTORE
  52.        INFORMATION IS FROM A BACKUP COPY.
  53.  
  54.    5.  USE CAUTION when restoring an "old" set of EXPLOG files for referencing
  55.        records from a different file set.  A suggested procedure for doing so
  56.        is this:
  57.  
  58.        a.  Make a backup of your CURRENT EXPLOG files (all 3 of them).
  59.        b.  Restore (or copy) the "old" EXPLOG files to the directory where
  60.            the Expense Log program file (EL30.EXE) is.
  61.        c.  Run Expense Log as normal.
  62.        d.  When you are ready to return to your "current" records, restore
  63.            (or copy) the files from step 1 to the directory where the Expense
  64.            Log program file (EL30.EXE) is.
  65.        e.  Run Expense Log as normal.
  66.
